Golf

Owen Sound Chippers

Golf is a lifetime sport that is great for athletes of any age and offers the unique opportunity for families to play and enjoy a sport together.  Officially recognized as a Special Olympics sport in Canada in 2008, golf has been one of the movement’s fastest growing programs. Today, more than 2,000 athletes with an intellectual disability are registered in the sport across the country.

The Owen Sound Chippers were officially a “team” in 2017 and we were warmly welcomed to make Stone Tree Golf & Fitness Resort in Owen Sound our home resort.  Our team is growing every year and gaining recognition within the Owen Sound golf community.  Our golf community provides us with donated equipment (clubs, bags, shoes, even clothing) which is so appreciated by our athletes.  Each week, we do some  golf “warm-up” stretches, practice and learn new skills and then play one or two holes of golf.  Even during the pandemic, we held weekly “virtual” practices where we exercised and learned about important golf skills.

Each year, we host a tournament and golf teams from within Central District are keen to return every year.  In 2020, we were chosen to host the Provincial Qualifiers for Central District (the season before Provincial Summer Games).  Our team is fortunate to have amazing qualified coaches who are not only keen about the sport but who are proud of our athletes whose golf skills grow at each practice.  We welcome athletes of every age and ability.  Come on out . . . swing some clubs, enjoy new friends and practice a game you can play and enjoy for a life time!
