Nordic Skiing

 Owen Sound Waxwings

The Owen Sound Waxwings are a group of Nordic (Cross Country) Skiers who meet Saturday mornings at 10am in January and February for 2 Hours of fun skiing and instruction. There are a few “dry land” practices are also planned for the fall. We ski at the Sawmill Nordic Centre in Hepworth, along with the Port Elgin Special Olympics Snow Gliders.

We coach athletes from the level of absolute beginner to competitors at the national level.  We combine fun and companionship with fitness. In 2020 four athletes represented Ontario at the Canada National Winter Games, with Anne Howlett going on to join the National Training Squad for the 2023 World Games in Kazan Russia.

Each athlete is responsible for obtaining their own Bruce Ski Club membership, supplying their own skis, boots and poles and arriving before 10 am appropriately dressed for cold weather as appropriate for every practice. The coaches and parent supporters can help an athlete to find good quality used skis in the fall season before the on snow season starts. COVID precautions will be observed for 2021/22.
